WAR AND GENOCIDE

Disobeying Angkar's Viney (Cont.)
One afternoon, after coming to fetch our lunch from the camp’s kitchen, I felt my legs shaking and a sheer fatigue throughout my body, a sign of weakness due to prolonged malnutrition. So I told my team leader that I didn’t feel well and would like to take the rest of the afternoon off. Afterward, I went to the hut which was our sleeping quarters and lay down to give my body a much needed rest. A couple of hours later, I heard someone yell at the far end of the hut calling everyone to come out and assemble in front of it. From the tone of his voice, I knew instantly that there was trouble ahead. I got up slowly and made my way to the gathering place. There I found a man named Chay, who was our brigade’s leader, and a few of my colleagues who, like me I presumed, were feeling unwell as well. Chay told us to sit in a half circle in front of him as he was preparing to interrogate us to inquire what were the causes of our staying in the hut while everyone else was out working in the fields. Among the six or so people who were being interrogated, I was the youngest and smallest. Hence, Chay picked on me first. He asked me what kind of sickness I had that warranted my absence from going to work. I told him that I had a temperature and that I felt fatigue so badly this afternoon. Chay put the palm of his hand on my forehead to feel my temperature and afterward chastised me that I was pretending to be sick, and that my sickness was not real. It was an emotional sickness, chheur sateh arom. As he vented his rage at me, Chay drew his hand in a motion of slapping me in the face for not convincing him enough of my sickness. Instantly, I closed my eyes and waited for the inevitable punishment. But Chay somehow stopped short of slapping me. He then turned to a young man named Met who sat next to me. “What is the matter with you?” he asked Met. “I am sick.” Met answered him matter-of-factly. “Liar!” Chay screamed. “You all are lazy pretending to be sick.” He went on. In an attempt to defend his innocence, Met interjected that if he were not sick, he would not stay away from work. Chay was enraged upon hearing Met’s rebuttal to his accusation. In a split second, he stepped forward and kicked Met right on the chest. Met fell backward and struggled to sit up again as he was assessing the damages to his mouth and chest from the impact of Chay’s kicking. His mouth bled profusely. But no one dared say a word. We all sat still as stones waiting for Chay to make his next move.

After venting his rage at Met, Chay seemed to have fulfilled his callous behavior. In a mood of contempt, he ordered us to get out of his sight and never again use illness as a pretext to stay away from work. Under Chay’s sharp gaze, we sheepishly and quietly went back into the hut. As we were walking into the hut, I stole a quick glance at Met to see how badly hurt he was. His lips were badly swollen as Chay’s knee might have hit them when he delivered his kick. Met was really in bad shape. But nothing we could do to help him. Not even a word of sympathy. In the Khmer Rouge’s silent code of conduct, anyone who was punished by a cadre or cadres should be shunned. Hence, it was prudent to stay away from a person being punished whether that person was guilty or not. With a helpless feeling, I went to my sleeping quarters and lay down waiting for the rest of the afternoon to pass by.

That evening, as we gathered to get our rationed dinner, Chay ordered the cook to make sure that those who were sick should get only half the food ration because it was the rule that sick people shall receive only half as much food as those who were able to go to work. Thus, he once again summoned all of us, who were sick and unable to go to work that afternoon, to line up and get our ration together while he was watching over the cook’s shoulder to make sure that our ration was properly cut in half. It was like adding insult to injury. Our ration was not only being cut, but it was done in such a high profile way to humiliate us in front of our peers. Though we didn’t know what made Chay behave callously toward us, it was apparently clear that we were being used as an example for those who might want to take a break from work because of not feeling well. The message was clear: If you are sick, you will be punished for being sick by having your food ration cut. In the Khmer Rouge labor camps where we lived with constant hunger all the time, food was the greatest weapon of motivation and punishment against us. We would do anything just to get our meager ration.

After receiving my half ration, I went to sit next to Teav, a boy with whom I used to herd the water buffalos before we were conscripted to join the children work brigades. In a whisper, Teav told me that he was so hungry and wanted to sneak out of the camp after dark to go to our village and seek out our parents to see if they had any food to feed us. He needed someone to go with him as a companion. Without giving it much thought, I agreed to his proposal, even though I was not sure if my mother had any food for me once I came home. But the power of hunger seemed to overcome my rationale.

Just before sunset, Teav came to get me. Under the pretext of going to wash ourselves in a pond nearby, Teav and I surreptitiously walked away from the camp and lingered by a bush near the pond waiting for darkness to arrive. All of a sudden, black clouds started to form on the horizon, and there were some strong winds indicating that a thunderstorm was imminent. As all the creatures rushed to their shelters to seek refuge from the imminent storm, Teav and I hesitated about following through our going home plan. But we somehow thought that the storm presented a good opportunity for us because most of the people would be going into the huts to seek shelter from it, and if we made a run for it, we could probably make it half way to our village before the rain arrived. Using some bushes as cover, we made our way toward a path which led to our village and started running as fast as we could. After we ran for about a few hundreds yards, we heard someone yelled at us to stop. From the corner of his eye, Teav saw several Khmer Rouge cadres having a meeting under a tree located about a couple hundred yards from the path on which we ran. Sensing that we were in trouble, Teav told me to run faster and pretended that we didn’t hear anything. Seeing that we didn’t slow down, one of the cadres named Khoeun ran after us in an attempt to arrest us but he was unable to catch up with us. We kept on running for about ten minutes; then the rain started to fall. We stopped to catch our breath and walked the rest of the way home in the rain. The distance from the camp to our village was about four miles, but it felt like eternity for us. We knew that we had been spotted going home without permission, which was a serious offense. The Khmer Rouge called such infraction “disobeying Angkar’s Viney” or not upholding the organization’s discipline. Those who were found guilty of disobeying Angkar’s viney could be punished by torture, physically and mentally, at best, or be executed at worst. Thus, with this worrisome knowledge in our heads, Teav and I went our separate ways upon arriving in the village and planned to get up around three o’clock in the morning to sneak back into the camp while everyone was still asleep.

My mother was surprised to see me coming home in the dark and soaking wet. I told her that I came home to have her mend my torn shirt which I was wearing. But my mother seemed to know that my real motive was not only to have that torn shirt mended but rather to have some food in my stomach. After giving me some dry clothes to change into, my mother went to the kitchen and opened up a crevice where she hid some rice. She cooked the rice and a piece of dried fish in a kettle as the Khmer Rouge authority did not allow people to have any pots and pans at home, beside a kettle to boil water. After the rice and the dried fish were cooked, my mother told me to go to the kitchen and eat the food quietly lest there was Khmer Rouge vigilante called chhlob spying on us while she was mending my shirt.

Despite enormous hunger, I lost my appetite for food because of the overwhelming fear and anxiety about the consequence of my action once I returned to the camp. Khoeun was one of the camp’s supervisors. The fact that he spotted Teav and me running away from the camp was a serious cause for concern. Although the Khmer Rouge had, at that point, stopped classifying people as being new or based, my predicament was compounded by the fact that Teav was the child of base people who had some privilege while facing disciplinary action regarding wrong doing. Hence, should there be any punishment for our act of disobeying Angkar’s Viney, I would certainly be the one who would bear the brunt of it. The more I think about the consequence and punishment I might face, the more worried I became. All of a sudden, my stomach began to churn and my throat tightened. The fear had finally broken me down, mentally and physically. I struggled to swallow the food in my mouth and left the rest uneaten while sitting quietly in the kitchen to regain my composure.

As I was pondering the consequences and possible punishment I would face when I returned to the camp, my mother came into the kitchen to see what had taken me so long to finish the meal. She was surprised to see that I had only eaten half of the rice she cooked for me. Usually I would have eaten twice as much. Responding to her inquiry, I told my mother that I was not feeling well, and that my appetite had somehow diminished. I tried my best to hide my fear and anxiety from my mother and the fact that I had been caught breaking the Khmer Rouge’s rule, for if she knew what kind of a situation I was in she would be worried to death. My mother told me to go to sleep and, whenever I woke up, I should come to eat the rest of my meal which she put in a bowl and covered it with a rice basket called L’Eiy.

WAR AND GENOCIDE

Disobeying Angkar’s Viney

After returning from the dam’s building labor camp, I was ordered to go look after farm animals again while waiting for my next assignment. Hence, I went to do cowboy’s work for the time being. One day, as I was herding water buffalos with Oss in the fields, I saw a skinny man struggling to make a small mound with a hoe. Sitting nearby was a little girl about six years old. Oss and I went over to ask him what he was doing. The man told us that he was burying his deceased father who had died of starvation. As he was talking to us, the man leaned heavily on the hoe’s handle, using it to support his body from collapsing. Oss and I asked him why he didn’t get some other villagers to come and help him bury his father. The man told us that most of the people in his village were dying of starvation, so no one was willing to come and help him bury his father. He was only able to beg the village’s chief to provide an oxcart and bring his father’s corpse to that spot. After dropping the corpse off, the chief returned to the village leaving him and his little daughter to deal with the task of burying the corpse alone. After listening to the man’s story, we took pity on him and decided to help him bury his father’s corpse. Oss and I took turns filling in the grave and we eventually made a decent mound to mark the grave’s spot.

While we were making the grave’s mound, I noticed that the man’s eyes were fixed on a frog Oss had caught earlier in a pond and had hung it on his waist’s band. After we finished making the grave’s mound, the man thanked us profusely. Afterward, in a rather hesitant voice, he asked Oss if he (Oss) would skin his frog now and give him the discarded frog’s head, skin, and stomach’s contents. Oss agreed to the man’s request, and, as soon as he got the frog’s head, skin, and stomach’s contents, the man built a small fire, wrapped the frog’s head and stomach’s contents in its skin, and tossed it in the fire. A few minutes later, he picked it up and ate the whole thing. Oss and I were dumbfounded to see the man actually eat the frog’s skin and stomach contents. If we didn’t see it with our own eyes, we would not have believed it. Seeing how hungry and desperate the man was, Oss decided to give him the frog as well. I also gave him a few snails and crabs which I had caught in a stream earlier. At that point it was late afternoon. We said goodbye to the man and the little girl and went to herd our water buffalos home. That day we went home empty handed, without any wild critter to supplement our diet. However, Oss and I did not feel bad at all because we knew in our heart that we had done something right to help a desperate man.

A few weeks later, I was called up to join the children’s work brigade again. This time, we were sent to the sub-district headquarters, Bonteay Staung, where we would meet up with other children from the surrounding villages. There were about 200 of us altogether, and we were divided into battalions called Kang Roy, Kang Ha (Group of 100 and 50, respectively) which were supervised by leaders selected from the youth brigade. We were further divided into groups of 25 which were headed by our peers. Though we sometimes crossed paths or worked side by side with the youth brigades, we were not allowed to commingle with them. However, there were some occasions when both the youth and children brigades were summoned to attend a meeting together which gave us opportunity to commingle briefly in the gathering place. During those meeting occasions, I met my brothers, Sokha and Sama, a few times. My brothers gave me some pointers regarding the youth leaders who were appointed to supervise us. They admonished me to be wary of those leaders and not to do anything that might displease them, for they had absolute authority over my life.

During the first few days after our arrival in the labor camp, we were ordered to pull rice seedlings from the nurseries. It was my first time performing such a task. Since our arrival in Ponlear Chey, I had somehow been spared from doing the rice transplanting chores. But this time there was no way out for me. Therefore, I had to confront the challenges head on. To keep my clumsiness from being noticed, I worked next to my best buddy, Penh, the boy who taught me how to climb and collect palm tree sap, and studied his every move. When I ran into something I did not know how to do, such as tying the seedlings into a bundle, I would ask Penh to show me how. It was such a nerve wracking time for me. However, thanks in part to Penh’s instruction, I was able to master the tasks in a relatively short time.

The children brigade, to which I was assigned, was a mobile work unit. Hence, we moved around constantly from village to village. The worse thing about these constant moves was that it usually occurred in the evening hours after we got off from work, which meant that, in order for us to reach the new camp, we had to walk throughout the night. Occasionally, when Mother Nature decided to add her wrath to our misery, we would have to walk in the rain and in pitch darkness since the cruel youth leaders would not let us stop and seek shelter from the inclement weather.

Like the previous labor camp in which I was assigned to dig and carry earth to build a dam across the Staung River two baskets at a time, the works at this new labor camp were just as intense. Though we were only children, our youth’s leaders made us work like adults. For instance, if we were to transplant rice seedlings, we would be allotted almost as many acres of land to toil per day as the adults. Therefore, everyone had to work strenuously to complete the daily quota.

The work which the children brigades were assigned to do varied from village to village. Sometimes we were assigned to dig small canals or build dikes in the rice fields. But frequently we were ordered to spin the wheels of a primitive wooden water scooping device, called Rohat Teuk, to get water into the rice fields in preparation for rice seedlings transplantation. This Rohat Teuk looked somewhat like a stationary exercise bicycle. To get the water into the rice field, one would sit on the wooden saddle and pedal the wheel constantly to maximize the flow of water along its wooden tunnel. Otherwise, the water that was scooped up by the wooden plank propellers (like those on a steamboat) would leak out along the way which could render much of the human energy being put into the tasks a waste. Though it looked like fun for people who ride and pedal on those spinning wheels, it was certainly no fun operating those devices. I had the misfortune of working with this Rohat Teuk dozens of times. The worst part was when there was an urgent need for water in a rice field where people began to transplant the seedlings, which would put tremendous pressure on the spinning wheel’s operator to spin the wheels as fast as he could to get the necessary water into the field.

After the rice seedlings transplanting period was concluded, my brigade was sent to clear new lands and transform them into rice fields in an outlying village called Phum Po Rong. It was in late July of 1978 when we arrived in Po Rong. As usual, we were placed in a labor camp located about a mile or so from the village. By that point, I began to notice that the Khmer Rouge’s authority did not allow the children whom they recruited to work in the various mobile work brigades to maintain any contact with their parents. Hence, they rarely let us stay in the village where we worked. The camp was a way to isolate us physically and emotionally from our parents. We were no longer our parent’s children. We were now Angkar’s children. Therefore, whatever we do, we must obey and follow Angkar’s Viney (the Organization’s rule). If anyone were caught sneaking out of the camp to visit his parents overnight, he would be reprimanded with verbal warning, or, in some cases, beaten by the brigade’s leaders. I imagined similar discipline applied to the girl’s work brigades as well (the Khmer Rouge did not allow commingling of the opposite sexes, even for children).

We spent about one month working on clearing forested lands and turning them into rice fields. Our work condition was harsh. First, we had to clear cut and burn the forests and scrubs. Then, using hoes, we uprooted any scrub and tree stems that remained underground. Once the land was cleared of scrubs and tree stumps, we would go around and flatten any termite mound to even out the landscape so that a rice field could be created. Sometimes, we had to work in the rain as our leaders would not let us stop or seek shelter from the inclement weather. We were basically forced to work like animals. No sort of inclement weather could keep us away from the forced labor that the Khmer Rouge instituted we perform. However, those harsh working conditions were probably not what concerned us the most. The lack of food had been one overwhelming concern for all of us who had been forced to join the children mobile work brigades.

Since the end of the rice planting season, some time around July, our food ration, which consisted of a bowl of porridge and some bland soup, had been reduced significantly because of the shortage of rice. Hence, we went about going to work hungry all the time. As a child who had been through perhaps one of the worst starvation experiences that had ever happened to the humanity in the Khmer Rouge labor camps, I could say with certainty that hunger could take rationality away from one’s thinking.

WAR AND GENOCIDE

The Silent Genocide (Cont.)
After learning of Ta Chim’s immoral behavior, I immediately thought about my mother’s earlier encounter with his flirtation. All of a sudden, I was having second thought about my mother’s story, that she might be a victim of Ta Chim’s misdeed as well. My greatest fear was that my mother might have been raped by Ta Chim, and that she did not report it to anyone, for fear of reprisal or, worse, being killed by the Khmer Rouge. The more I thought about the possibility, the more distressed I felt. I wanted to ask my mother to get to the bottom of it; but I somehow held back and hoped that my suspicion was unfounded. For years, I continued to live with that agonizing suspicion. But, the feeling that my mother might have been a rape victim during the Khmer Rouge regime never faded away from my mind. After the Khmer Rouge’s regime was toppled from power, I summoned my courage a few times to ask my mother about it. However, I fell short of doing so, for fear of opening up an old wound that my mother had spent all of these years trying to heal, or cover up. It took me 29 years to finally overcome my fear and ask perhaps one of the most unwanted questions to a person I loved and respected dearly. The day was August 22, 2006, during a layover in Singapore’s Changi Airport on our last journey to Cambodia together that I decided to ask my mother that painful question. Because of the reverse time of day, we couldn’t sleep. Thus, my mother and I sat next to each other in our hotel room and reminisced on our past. We talked about life in the old days, how we coped with the difficulty of living in refugee camps in Thailand, and how fortunate we were to be able to go and live in the United States of America. But the majority of our conversation focused mostly on our ordeals living under the Khmer Rouge’s rule. I was very impressed at how my mother recalled past events so vividly despite her having a mature Parkinson’s disease. While we were talking about our lives during the Khmer Rouge period, I gingerly and uneasily steered our conversation to the time we spent at Ponlear Chey village. After recalling our work at the vegetable garden and the names of people who were working with us there, I closed my eyes and agonizingly asked my mother if Ta Chim had violated her. In a calm and serene voice, my mother said, no. Beside his flirtatious talk, Ta Chim did not misbehave. I felt so relieved to hear that my mother had been spared from the cruelty of life’s circumstances. Though one might suspect that my mother was just telling me what I wanted to hear in order to spare me from a shared suffering, I had no reason to believe otherwise because, at that point, I had already been a chosen offspring who would have the opportunity to listen to many secrets of her life’s stories. Over the course of our lives spent together, my mother had probably shared more of her life’s trials and tribulations with me than anyone else.

One day, Ta Plaok called me to his side and told me that I was no longer allowed to stay and work at the vegetable garden. I was to report to the village the next day in order to join the children work brigades which were being called up to help build a dam across the Staung River. So I went up to the village the next day and reported my presence at the communal dining hall where all the children were gathering. After putting us into groups and assigning a group leader, we were ordered to march to our worksite which was located somewhere east of the National Highway 6.

We spend the whole afternoon walking from the village to our worksite which was about 10 miles away. At dust, we arrived at our worksite, which was a gigantic camp. There were a lot of long huts built in groups of four or six to house the workers. We were put into two huts among a group of huts housing the children from other villages. Before my departure for the work camps, my mother gave me a homemade pouch with a metal plate and a spoon inside along with a checkered scarf, krama. After going to receive my food ration that evening, I cleaned my plate and spoon, put them back inside the pouch and kept it next to me as I slept.

The next morning, we were ordered to go to the storage rooms to pick up hoes, hollow baskets, called bangkey, and balancing poles, called dangrek, as we would need them to dig up and transport earth for the dam construction. We were put together in a six-person team, with two people carrying hoes and four people carrying the poles and baskets. Each person was given a quota of one cubic meter of earth per day to be moved from the pit to the back of the dam. Thus, in total, we were given the task of moving six cubic meters of earth daily. If we failed to meet our quota, we would be forced to finish our task after dinner. A generator was run every evening to light up the worksites until 10 o’ clock at night. During the first few weeks, our team was able to complete our quota by dinner time. However, our rigors began to fade soon after once the stresses of this hard labor began to take a toll on our health. On top of that, our nutrition was meager at best, and we were constantly hungry as we worked. Eventually, our team ended up working at night as well. Sometimes, we had to work until the wee hour of 10 p.m.

After about three months of working at the dam’s construction camp, we were moved to a different location to help finish up that portion. At the new location, we were able to see what the dam looked like. It was shaped like the curve of a buffalo’s horn. Our new location was at the tip of one end of it. A few days after we arrived at our new work location, Samoeun, Om Po’s nephew, Penh, the boy who taught me how to climb and collect palm tree’s saps, I, and a couple of other fellow slave laborers decided to run away from the camp and go home. Samoeun, the oldest among us and appeared to be knowledgeable of the area, was our ring leader. At the appointed time under the cover of darkness, we met up and sneaked out of the camp surreptitiously. Our escape route was to follow the bank of the Staung River walking upstream. When we encountered a village, we would make a detour and came back to the bank of the river again. By early dawn, we made it across National Highway 6 and were on our way toward Ponlear Chey. We kept walking along the bank of the Staung River or close to it and pretended that we were local kids going about finding vines and forest products to be used in making farm implements. At about noon time, we made it to Ponlear Chey and quietly slipped into the village. Despite the fact that we made it home safe and sound, I was quite scared afterward, for I didn’t know what repercussion I would face once the Khmer Rouge authority found out that I had deserted from a labor camp. Fortunately, the dam’s building children workforces were dismissed two days later, and nobody seemed to take notice of our early arrival. Though I was spared from the consequence of my foolish action, my mother scolded me for making such a careless decision.
